Nourishing Thoughts sprang from my need to express myself with more freedom about Nutrition. I am an Accredited Dietitian & Sports Nutritionist with a Gold Medal. Yes, truly! And I didn't even want to be one! In fact, I was a reluctant Dietitian. Science always attracted me, but my prime interest was in psychology. In Spite of it, I ended up choosing to major in Food & Nutrition. Little did I know that being a Nutritionist entails not only being an expert on food and its implication on health, but also being an anatomist & biochemist, a counselor, scientist, food expert, chef, educator, shopping guide and so much more!

Over the years, as my experience grew, I was becoming aware of the shortcomings that Modern Nutrition Science has in its ability to tackle health for our gene pool. Why were some foods heaty? Why did  honey work for coughs? Why did hot milk cause acidity for some & cold milk work as an antacid for others? Why did being in an excited state cause impaired digestion?

Questions were myriad and answers to them, either not satisfactory from just the modern scientific perspective or too long and elaborate. One which I was not able to cover or explain effectively to my patients in the limited time of counselling sessions while being in the limits of modern scientific principles. I have always felt that our traditional, age old wisdom especially in regard to food and habits do have an impact on our health. With more research in modern science the evidence has started piling up that all that is our heritage, our natural wisdom is not humbug. That all “old – grandmother’s tales” aren’t just tales. They do have strong and scientific backing. Maybe some of it has been lost due to miscommunication.

In one of my psychology classes, I still remember my professor giving us an example about mind-sets. The story goes – A young girl always saw that when her mother made chicken, she would marinate and stuff it but just before putting it in the oven she would break off one of its legs and throw it out of the kitchen window. To cut a long story short, she continued the practice when she cooked and her daughter wanted to know why it was done. the reasoning - because the grandmother had a small oven and the whole chicken wouldn’t fit! In the end, it was just a matter of asking the right question.

This exactly is my sentiment when it comes to traditional wisdom. I don’t want to disregard it. I want to ask questions and understand.  Food and its implication on our bodies and health is like a mystery, a puzzle to me, one which I am very curious to solve or at the least understand better.

I also want to make people aware and promote the fact that accepting oneself and our efforts completely  is as important as achieving our goals. possibly more important than it.

Nourishing Thoughts has sections which will have articles about health from the perspectives of mental, physical and also spiritual health to fulfill these purposes.

I am on a quest to learn, explore and curate. And I am pleased to invite you to join me on this journey of wonder, Of trying to find, understand and spread the word on the importance of lifestyle change for better health. Of not limiting our health to merely the food that we put in our mouths, but remembering that good health is integration of mind, body and spirit!
